Henryk Gorecki: Miserere
by Mark Nowakowski
After the Elektra recording of the Third Symphony, this is probably the finest Gorecki experience available in the recorded audio realm. The opening Miserere is epic in scope, an incredible statement of the complexities of faith seen through the simple prism of Gorecki’s creative approach.
The work, ‘Amen’, is constructed entirely on the two syllable word, moving from a deeply sonorous and fragile beginning to an ecstatic climax of sound. ‘Szeroka Woda,’ or ‘Broad Waters,’ are choral works set on Romantic Polish Poetry which nonetheless bear the distinct mark of Gorecki’s piety. In their tuneful simplicity and sweet optimism, they are perhaps the highlight of this recording.
